This week in #Firebase: January 13, 2017

It’s been a little while since I did my ‘This week in Firebase’, sorry about that, so for the first one of 2017, let’s take a look at what’s going on in Firebase with updates from Google as well as great stuff being done in the community.

South by Southwest!

If you’re going to South By Southwest, Isabel Palomar and Adrian Catalan are doing a talk on “Firebase & Android: A real-time match, synced in heaven” (great title!), which I’d love to see. Hope I can make it there!

Lots of FCM

On GitHub, the user Fre5h (aka Artem Genvald) has started an open source PHP app to work with Firebase Cloud Messaging. If you followed my series (part 1, part 2, part 3) on building an end-to-end sample for FCM, you’ll have seen my very primitive app server. It looks like Artem is taking that to the next level. Check it out!

And if you want a version written in Go, check out this one from maddevsio! 🙂

A Firecast (by yours truly) on Getting Started with Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android

Don’t forget iOS

Here’s a nice article from Todd on A/B testing in iOS with Firebase!

A really brilliant FCM on iOS video from Todd Kerpelman

Crash Reporting and App Quality

The latest episode of #MeetFirebase with @CodingDoug where he meets with Nalin from Firebase Crash Reporting

Your new year’s resolution — @CodingDoug has a brilliant post on the Firebase Blog about improving App Quality. Make it a must-read!

Best of the rest!

David East’s new episode on Firebase for SQL developers, this week talking about Security Rules

Ashish put together a great tutorial on CodeMentor about how to get started with Firebase on Android. Check it out! He follows using the console to create a Firebase project and get the requisite JSON files. There’s another, newer, option which some folks might prefer — the ability to configure Firebase right from within Android Studio — you can learn more about that here.
